Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2, the right set-up for the way you vape
A pod mod that takes around fifteen coils and two families of pods can feel like a wardrobe with too many hangers. The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 comes with two pods, and most reviews judge it on those parts alone. Yet the same device is not set up the same way for a tight draw as for an airy one. Five criteria make the difference, the draw you want, the coil, the type of nicotine, carrying it around and how much upkeep you accept.
Who the Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 suits
The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 suits a vaper who wants to cover both mouth to lung and direct lung vaping with one device, up to 80 W. Its built-in 3200 mAh battery, USB-C charging (5 V, 2 A) and 117 g weight, according to the manufacturer, place it between a pocket pod and a box mod.
It suits you less if you want to swap batteries, build your own coils or go beyond 80 W. Between those two ends, everything comes down to the pod and the coil, as the next table shows.
Luxe XR Max 2 set-ups, the table by profile
The power bands for the two coils in the box agree between a retailer listing and a published review. For the other GTX values, the manufacturer gives no band on its product page, so the coil packaging is the reference.
| Profile | Pod | Coil | Power | Airflow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tight draw | Luxe XR MTL | GTX Mesh 0.8 ohm (in the box) | 12 to 16 W | Closed |
| Very tight draw | Luxe XR MTL | GTX 1.2 ohm | See the packaging | Closed |
| Airy draw | Luxe XR DTL | GTX Dual Mesh 0.2 ohm (in the box) | 45 to 60 W | Open |
| No coil changes | Luxe X | Built-in coil, 0.3 to 0.8 ohm | Depends on the pod | To taste |
Smart mode, on by default, sets the wattage itself from the coil it detects. It is the easiest way into every row of this table.
Tight draw profile, the MTL pod and nicotine salts
A mouth to lung draw, or MTL, holds the vapour in the mouth before you inhale. On the Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 it relies on the MTL pod and the higher values of the GTX range.
The 0.8 ohm in the box, then the 1.2 ohm
The GTX Mesh 0.8 ohm coil runs between 12 and 16 W. One published review finds this pod a touch more restrictive than the DTL one, and still praises its flavour.
For an even tighter draw, the GTX range goes up to 1.2 ohm. The airflow slider on the side then closes almost completely.
Which e-liquid for this draw
One retailer recommends nicotine salts with the MTL pod and a 0.8 or 1.0 ohm coil. In the UK, nicotine-containing e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in 10 ml bottles, whatever the type of nicotine.
Airy draw profile, the DTL pod and the Dual Mesh
Direct lung vaping, or DTL, takes the vapour straight into the lungs, with an open draw and more volume. That is the ground of the DTL pod and its double mesh coil.
The 0.2 ohm Dual Mesh at the right power
The GTX Dual Mesh 0.2 ohm coil works between 45 and 60 W, according to a retailer listing and a published review that agree. A French review published by Youvape finds 50 to 55 W enough and suggests two or three puffs at 30 W on a new coil before going higher. That review also finds the draw, with the slider wide open, slightly less airy than on the first Luxe XR Max.
A coil you change less often
The review published by MIST, a British retailer, puts forward an upkeep marker. According to that reviewer, dual mesh coils generally last longer than single mesh ones, and a Dual Mesh coil is changed every two to four weeks rather than every one to two. A French retailer listing gives two to three weeks for the kit's coils. For an airy vaper, the gap mainly affects upkeep.
Switching profile, two pods on one base
Some vapers move between a tight draw and a looser one depending on the moment or the liquid. The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 lends itself to this, since the kit includes an MTL pod and a DTL pod, each with its own coil.
The pod lifts off the base and swaps in a few seconds. In Smart mode the device recognises the new coil and adjusts the power, according to a retailer listing and the British review already mentioned. The airflow slider still has to be moved by hand.
The menu also offers an Eco mode, described as easier on the battery, and a Pulse mode that aims for steady power as the battery drains. Neither replaces the choice of pod.
Low upkeep profile, the Luxe X pods
Changing a coil puts some vapers off. The manufacturer states that the Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 accepts every Luxe X pod, with a built-in mesh coil from 0.3 to 0.8 ohm.
With these, the whole pod is replaced when the flavour fades, with no part to handle. The French review already cited points out the trade-off, a narrower choice of values than the GTX range.
On the move profile, what matters away from home
Away from home, three points weigh more than power. The first is size, 108 x 32.1 x 26.4 mm for 117 g according to the manufacturer, with a silicone base that the brand presents as a gain in stability.
The second is the lock, designed by the manufacturer to prevent accidental firing. The Vapingpost review describes a sliding switch above the USB-C port that blocks both vaping and settings, and finds it handy for carrying the device around.
The third is refilling, done from underneath, which means taking the pod out. UK rules cap refillable pods at 2 ml, so the kit sold in Britain is the TPD version with two 2 ml pods, a UK retailer lists the same contents, and it needs refilling more often than the larger international pods.
The profiles this pod mod suits less
The problems raised in reviews have more to do with the format than with faults. A pod mod with a built-in battery is not a box mod replacement for everyone.
- The vaper who wants to swap batteries on the go, since the battery is fixed and charging means waiting.
- Coil builders, whom one British review points towards other kit.
- Cloud chasers, limited to 80 W.
- Anyone who prefers top filling.
- Anyone who struggles with small print, since the puff counter and coil reading are hard to read according to one French review.
FAQ
These questions cover the screen, the battery and getting started, beyond the set-ups described above.
Is Eco mode worth using?
It aims to stretch battery life. One retailer describes it as an economy mode, and a British review suggests it when the battery could only be partly charged, to last until the next charge.
Can you lower the screen brightness?
Yes. According to a British review, the 0.96 inch colour screen starts at full brightness by default, very clear in the dark. The setting sits in the menu, opened with two presses of the button.
How long does the Luxe XR Max 2 take to charge?
The manufacturer gives no time. A British review says a flat battery is mostly recharged in about an hour, with the 5 V, 2 A charging stated on the product page.
Does this pod mod suit a first purchase?
One review files it under "beginner or advanced" use. Smart mode, on by default, saves you hunting for the right power, and the MTL pod in the box lets you start with a tight draw.
Where do you check the battery level?
On the screen, which shows the charge left next to the power, the vaping mode and the coil reading, according to the manufacturer. A quick look before heading out tells you whether the USB-C cable is needed.
Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2, a pod mod that adapts to its vaper
One device, four set-ups. For a tight draw, the MTL pod and the 0.8 ohm coil are enough, with the 1.2 ohm in reserve. For an airy draw, the 0.2 ohm Dual Mesh gives its best around 50 W and wears out more slowly than a single mesh, by a British reviewer's estimate. Luxe X pods remove coil changes altogether, and in the UK the 2 ml pods are the standard. The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 has no one-size setting, it has the one that suits each vaper, a modular approach that runs through much of recent vaping hardware.
